Last week was a time for goodbyes. I folded my hands in worship (the first time in several years) before the photograph of a man who had been so many things to me at so many different points - loving grandfather, willing provider, kind confidante, simple friend and a towering idol. I turned away helplessly as an old lady who had lovingly raised an entire flock of grandchildren in the house shed tears at the prospect of living there alone...I got the cutest handwritten note ever from my 10-year-old scrabble and chess partner... I hugged a girl in an airport-lounge as she smiled fighting back the tears welling up in her eyes... I promised to visit often and yet I wondered when the next time will be... I hoisted my bags unto the trolley, waved one last time, and I was gone... I am the modern peregrine - a tribeless nomad of my strange times! I drift with the wind... To my hometown, I have become the stranger who comes from nowhere in the wee hours of dawn and leaves amid quiet good byes from the family, even as curious onlookers gaze absently on... In crowded airports and bustling railway stations, I am the loner immersed in a book or staring into nothing, oblivious to all the surrounding family camaraderie...I let parts of me die in rented houses and hostel-rooms across the country and meander on to other lives and other deaths… Only the past's images - vivid and timeless - chase me in surreal mirages on railway-wagon windows... I promise to remember and hope to be remembered... I forget and am forgotten in turn... I am the castaway many times over! They tell me there's a better tomorrow beyond those hills on the horizon... A tomorrow for everything I love... They tell me it will be worth it all... They smile at my maudlin nostalgic reveries and they egg me on with promises... I pick my bags and I hit the road again... For I am a peregrine - a nomad braving desert winds and mirages in his quest for that one distant oasis... Orbiter Dictum: Joined TAS (Tata Administrative Services) in Pune on Sunday. I will be here for a fortnight. And then I hit the road again for a month-long tour. For those whom I haven't called, a hectic schedule and a dozen untied ends is my excuse… Keep the faith!

Perpetual peregrine ur. Moment here, a moment there-migrating a million miles-carrying alongwith you your ardent devotees-devotees who throng to have a darshan at this temple ensconced in the internet.
Will anyone start a deaddiction campaign called ATTICUS ANONYMOUS.
Buddy, yer writing is more captivating than the caffeine cups | |

This I can totally relate to.. especially to these lines...
"In crowded airports and bustling railway stations, I am the loner immersed in a book or staring into nothing, oblivious to all the surrounding family camaraderie...I let parts of me die in rented houses and hostel-rooms across the country and meander on to other lives and other deaths…"
I won't say empty things like 'you'll like it' or some such... simply, that you'll get used to this.... :)
Keep the faith, buddy! :)
